AsteRisk, LLC has achieved ISO/IEC 17043:2023 accreditation from Perry Johnson Laboratory Accreditation (PJLA) as a Proficiency Testing Provider, effective May 28, 2026. The accreditation confirms our technical competence to design, administer, and report proficiency testing programs for gas concentration in cylinders — independently verified, not self-declared.

Our history
AsteRisk has been part of the compressed gas industry's compliance landscape for more than three decades — evolving alongside the regulations, standards, and technology the industry relies on.
- 1993
Founded as The Worksafe Group of New England to provide safety, technical support, and compliance assistance to industrial gas companies — developing loss prevention programs that produced dramatic reductions in workplace injuries and vehicle accidents for clients large and small.
- 1995
Renamed AsteRisk following the sale of the original Worksafe Group to an insurance company. The company's focus evolved toward specialty and medical gas consulting, with a growing international client base.
- 1996
Developed the industry's first independent specialty gas recipe and label generating software — the foundation of what is now Specialty Gas Manager.
- 2011
Developed MSDS generation software, providing specialty gas operations personnel with a technical solution for safety data sheet management — the foundation of what is now SDS Manager.

AsteRisk provides further hands-on assistance through more than 120 seminars conducted each year, alongside its consulting, software, and ISO/IEC 17043-accredited proficiency testing services.

Tom Badstubner
President
President of AsteRisk since 1996, Tom serves as GAWDA's Medical and Specialty Gases Technical Support Consultant and sits on the Compressed Gas Association's Medical Gases and Regulatory Policy Committee and Medical Gases and Equipment Committee. He has developed ISO 17025 and ISO Guide 34 implementation programs used by specialty and medical gas firms worldwide, and has helped facilitate accreditation for the majority of the world's ISO 17025-accredited specialty gas firms. Before AsteRisk, Tom spent over 20 years in the compressed gas industry, including as an international compliance manager at a large gas company, overseeing programs at 350 sites in 13 countries.
Andre Marte
Senior Consultant
Senior Consultant at AsteRisk since 2009, Andre supports clients with technical document development — validation protocols, SOPs, and work instructions — for specialty and medical compressed gas applications. He instructs at Precision University (the Weldcoa/AsteRisk partnership) on specialty gas gravimetric manufacturing and gas chromatography analysis, leads GAWDA FDA compliance audits and cGMP/QSR training, and conducts conformance reviews against ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 17034, ISO/IEC 17043, and FSSC 22000. Andre holds an MBA from Pepperdine University, a BS in Biology/Chemistry from Chapman College, is a certified Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI), and brings more than 35 years of industry experience.
James “Ryan” Combest
GAWDA's Official OSHA, DHS & EPA Consultant
With 30 years in the compressed gas industry, Ryan performs onsite and remote medical gas compliance audits and helps clients build and maintain fuel-oxidizer safety programs and ISO 17025 quality assurance programs for specialty gas laboratories. He is a frequent presenter at GAWDA Professional Compliance Seminars on FDA medical and food gas regulations and at Precision University (Weldcoa) on gravimetric filling and gas chromatography, and supports the IWDC PurityPlus® Producer Program. Ryan holds a BS in Natural Resource Conservation and Management from the University of Kentucky, is a certified PCQI, Medical Gas Compliance Auditor, and cGMP Medical & Food Gas Compliance Trainer, and is an OSHA-authorized 10- and 30-Hour General Industry trainer.
